Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love, and what could be a more appropriate representation of love than a heart, especially one that sings? These lovely Inner Spirit Rattles from J. Davis Studio are based on the traditional Raku shakers used by Native American tribes to ensure blessings upon their crops and are most often used in modern day culture to express gratitude for the various blessings in one’s life.

Made from the clay found in and around the rugged Texas countryside that is home to, among others, Big Bend National Park and the Chihuahuan Desert, the shakers are made through the process of the ancient Japanese raku firing technique that incorporates all the natural elements (earth, fire, air and water), imbuing them with a built-in Zen-like quality. Indeed, it is said that, when one holds one of these shakers in their hand and gives it a shake, stress will naturally leave their body and is replaced by peace of mind. (Further adding to this Zen mystique it that “raku” literally translates to “happiness in the accident,” which is often experienced by those who say they fell in love when they were least looking for it.)

How you use the rattle is up to you (they are said to make great paperweights), but it is suggested to think of something you are thankful for and shake the rattle to give thanks for it. The idea is that, in doing so, one puts themselves in a spirit of positivity, gratitude, and affection, therefore rendering them better equipped to deal with the daily stresses and worries that sometimes bring us down.

Of course, there is also gratitude expressed in the giving, and we can’t think of a better way to show someone you love how thankful for them you are than by presenting them with this lovely token of your affection and your heart. Because giving hearts away is what Valentine’s Day is all about.
