Although it didn’t become an official holiday in the U.S. until 1908, Mother’s Day has been celebrated in some form since as far back as the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Much later, Christians in the U.K. established “Mothering Sunday” during the 16th century as a day in which people could return the churches they were baptized in (i.e. their “mother church”). While various mother-themed events were observed by abolitionists and suffragettes during the 1870s, it wasn’t until the 1900s that Anna Jarvis organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration (in honor of her own mother, Anne Reeve Jarvis, who had started “mother’s day work clubs” during the Civil War to teach women how to properly care for their children) that the event caught on and became an actual holiday, complete with gifts chosen to complement each mother’s unique personality.
